Angela Gossow grew up in Cologne with three other siblings. She was 17 when her parents separated. As their business fell apart and she was left with financial issues. The financial problems of her family were made more difficult by her anorexia and bipolar disorder. Gossow stated that there is a proper time and place to take everything into consideration with regards to her decision of stepping down from ARCH ENEMY's vocalist. My career began in 1991. I began to lose the joy to be in this position, living my life in the open road. So I opted not to pretend anymore, but rather step down. The original frontman of the band, Johan Liiva was replaced in 2000 by German singer Angela Gossow.
